52 vs 44 appearances
2025-26 is the season in which Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland both played a World Cup, the season they met in the Champions League round of 16, and the season the Ballon d'Or voters ranked them second and eighth. Mbappé scored 42 goals in 44 games for Real Madrid, finished as top scorer of both La Liga (25, a second Pichichi) and the Champions League (15, including a record 13 in the league phase), and then scored 10 at the World Cup to win a second Golden Boot and become the tournament's all-time leading scorer. Real Madrid won nothing. Haaland scored 38 in 52 for Manchester City, won a third Premier League Golden Boot with 27, lifted the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, and took Norway to a first World Cup quarter-final. Every number from the season is below.

Club totals are all competitions for the 2025-26 season. The hat-trick count covers club and country within the season window (1 July 2025 to 31 July 2026), so Haaland's five against Moldova and three against Israel are included. The head-to-head section lists only matches in which both players took the field: the Champions League second leg at the Etihad on 17 March 2026. The first leg at the Bernabéu (Mbappé injured), the league-phase match on 10 December 2025 (Mbappé an unused substitute) and Norway v France at the World Cup (Haaland an unused substitute) count in the teams' records but not in the players' head-to-head. Individual awards include the 2026 World Cup awards, which fall inside the window; the 2026 Ballon d'Or was decided in October and belongs to the next season's table. International figures are by calendar year, as the dataset records them.

Haaland's domestic cup row is split into the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, both won. Mbappé's Copa del Rey row is the one match he played, the round of 32 at Talavera; he was absent when Real Madrid went out at Albacete. His "Other" row is the Supercopa de España final in Jeddah, where he came off the bench. Neither club played a super cup inside the window.

Bernardo Silva was sent off for a handball on his own line (20') and Vinícius Júnior converted the penalty (22'); Haaland levelled before half-time, but Vinícius struck again in stoppage time (90+1', assist Tchouaméni). Real Madrid completed a 5-1 aggregate win and knocked City out for the fourth time in five seasons.

Mbappé, 26 at the start of the season, scored at a rate he had never managed at PSG: 42 goals in 44 games, 0.95 per game, and he would have passed his 44 of the year before had his left knee held. He hurt it against Celta Vigo on 7 December, played on through three more matches, including the two goals against third-tier Talavera in the Copa del Rey and the goal on 20 December that equalled Cristiano Ronaldo's Real Madrid record of 59 in a calendar year, and a scan on 31 December found a ligament lesion. He came off the bench in the Supercopa final on 11 January, which Madrid lost 3-2 to Barcelona; Xabi Alonso was dismissed the next day, Álvaro Arbeloa took over, and the club went out of the Copa del Rey at second-division Albacete in his first match, without Mbappé. The knee flared again in late February and cost him nearly a month, including both the Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica and the first leg against City. He still finished with 25 La Liga goals in 31 games for a second successive Pichichi, while Madrid finished second, eight points behind a Barcelona side who clinched the title with a 2-0 Clásico win on 10 May. It was his first club season without a trophy since his debut season at Monaco in 2015-16.
Haaland, 25 in July, scored his 100th Premier League goal against Fulham on 2 December in his 111th appearance, the fastest in the competition's history, and finished with 27 in 35 league games for a third Golden Boot in four seasons, level with Alan Shearer and Harry Kane on three and one short of the record shared by Thierry Henry and Mohamed Salah. City, though, finished second, seven points behind Arsenal, who won their first title in 22 years. The consolation was two Wembley finals: Nico O'Reilly's two goals beat Arsenal 2-0 in the EFL Cup final on 22 March, and Antoine Semenyo's goal beat Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Cup final on 16 May. Haaland's own cup contribution was the hat-trick that knocked Liverpool out in the quarter-final on 4 April, three of his 3 in 7 cup games. His 9 assists, 8 of them in the league, matched his best Premier League return. It was Pep Guardiola's last season at the club; Enzo Maresca replaced him in the summer.
The clubs met three times. On 10 December, in the league phase, Haaland scored a penalty as City won 2-1 at the Bernabéu while Mbappé, nursing the knee, sat on the bench unused. The round-of-16 draw in March paired them again. Mbappé missed the first leg, in which Federico Valverde scored a first-half hat-trick in a 3-0 win and Haaland had ten touches and no shots in 82 minutes. In the second leg at the Etihad on 17 March 2026, the only match of the season with both players on the pitch, Bernardo Silva was sent off for a handball on the line after 20 minutes and Vinícius Júnior scored the penalty; Haaland equalised in the 41st minute from Jérémy Doku's cross and was substituted at 56 minutes with City down to ten; Mbappé came on in the 69th for his first minutes in a month and was booked. Vinícius scored again in stoppage time, 2-1 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate, Real Madrid's fourth elimination of City in five seasons. Norway and France then met at the World Cup on 26 June, France winning 4-1 with Ousmane Dembélé scoring a 32-minute hat-trick and Mbappé assisting two, but Haaland was rested as an unused substitute with Norway already through, so that match is not in the players' record either.
Mbappé scored 15 in 11 Champions League games and finished as the competition's top scorer, one ahead of Bayern Munich's Harry Kane, whose side beat Madrid 6-4 on aggregate in the quarter-final; Mbappé scored in both legs of that tie. His 13 goals in the league phase are the most anyone has scored in the first stage of the competition: a hat-trick at Kairat Almaty on 30 September and four against Olympiacos on 26 November, three of them inside seven minutes, did most of the work. Haaland scored 8 in 10, 7 of them in the league phase, where his 50th Champions League goal against Napoli on 18 September came in his 49th appearance, the fewest of any player to reach the mark, and the 1 knockout goal was the equaliser against Madrid. City finished in the top eight and went straight to the round of 16; Madrid needed the play-off round, beating Benfica 3-1 on aggregate. Paris Saint-Germain retained the trophy on penalties against Arsenal in Budapest.
Both players scored slightly fewer league goals than their chances were worth. Haaland's 27 from 28.80 expected goals (-1.80) came on 3.80 shots per 90, a conversion rate of 21.6%; he scored 16 of 39 big chances (41.0%) and 3 of 4 penalties. Mbappé's 25 from 25.80 xG (-0.80) came on 5.00 shots per 90, the highest volume of his La Liga career, with 8 of 9 penalties and 9 of 28 big chances (32.1%). Penalties made up 32.0% of Mbappé's league goals against 11.1% of Haaland's, so on non-penalty goals per 90 the gap narrows to Mbappé 0.58 against Haaland 0.73.
Haaland scored 17 for Norway in 2025, 16 of them in a qualifying campaign in which he scored in all eight matches, five of them in the 11-1 win over Moldova, and equalled Robert Lewandowski's record for a single UEFA campaign, as Norway qualified for a first World Cup since 1998. At the tournament he scored twice against Iraq on his debut, twice against Senegal, once against Ivory Coast in the round of 32 and twice to beat Brazil 2-1 in the round of 16, Norway's first World Cup quarter-final; they lost 2-1 to England after extra time on 11 July and he was named in the Dream XI with 7 goals. Mbappé scored 7 for France in 2025 and 12 in 2026, 10 of them at the World Cup: two against Senegal on 16 June to pass Olivier Giroud as France's record scorer, two against Iraq on his 100th cap, two against Sweden, a penalty against Paraguay, one against Morocco in the quarter-final and two in the third-place match against England. France lost the semi-final 2-0 to Spain and finished fourth, but his ten goals won a second Golden Boot, the first player to win two, and took his World Cup total to 22, past Miroslav Klose's 16 as the most in the tournament's history. In October the Ballon d'Or voters put him second, 28 points behind Kane, with Haaland eighth. The international page has both careers year by year.
42 goals and 6 assists in 44 appearances for Real Madrid: 25 in La Liga (Pichichi), 15 in the Champions League (top scorer, with a record 13 in the league phase) and 2 in the Copa del Rey. He added 12 for France in 2026, 10 of them at the World Cup.
38 goals and 9 assists in 52 appearances for Manchester City: 27 in 35 Premier League games (Golden Boot), 8 in the Champions League and 3 in the FA Cup, including a hat-trick against Liverpool. He scored 17 for Norway in 2025 and 10 in 2026, 7 of them at the World Cup.
Once with both on the pitch: the Champions League round-of-16 second leg at the Etihad on 17 March 2026, which Real Madrid won 2-1 (5-1 on aggregate). Haaland scored City's goal; Mbappé came on as a substitute. Mbappé missed the first leg and the 10 December league-phase match through a knee problem, and Haaland was an unused substitute when Norway lost 4-1 to France at the World Cup on 26 June.
By goals and awards, Mbappé: 42 club goals to 38, top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League, the World Cup Golden Boot and second place in the Ballon d'Or to Haaland's eighth. By trophies, Haaland: the FA Cup and the EFL Cup against nothing for Real Madrid. Haaland also won the Premier League Golden Boot and reached a World Cup quarter-final with Norway.
Haaland won the FA Cup and the EFL Cup with Manchester City and the Premier League Golden Boot, and was named in the World Cup Dream XI. Mbappé won no team trophy, with Real Madrid second in La Liga and beaten in the Supercopa final, but won the Pichichi Trophy, finished as Champions League top scorer and won the World Cup Golden Boot and Bronze Ball.
