Haaland vs Mbappé: records and milestones

Both players have rewritten record books that stood for decades. Haaland's records are mostly about speed: fastest to 50 Champions League goals, most goals in a Premier League season, fastest to 100 in England. Mbappé's are about precocity and the biggest stage: youngest French scorer at a World Cup, the first hat-trick in a final since 1966, PSG's all-time top scorer.

Which records matter most?

Haaland: the speed records

Haaland's records are almost all rate records. He needed 49 Champions League games to reach 50 goals, thirteen fewer than Ruud van Nistelrooy's previous record of 62, and was the youngest to 40 and second-youngest to 50 after Lionel Messi. In England he broke the 38-game Premier League scoring record with 36 goals in his first season, reached 50 and 100 Premier League goals faster than anyone before him, and has 8 Premier League hat-tricks. For Norway he passed a national scoring record that had stood since 1937 at the age of 24 and became the fastest player of the 21st century to 50 international goals.

Mbappé: the youngest-ever records

Mbappé's records began with age: youngest Monaco debutant and scorer (beating Thierry Henry's marks), youngest French player to score at a World Cup, and the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pelé. Then came the scale records: PSG's all-time leading scorer, a record six consecutive Ligue 1 Golden Boots, and the World Cup marks from Qatar 2022 and the 2026 tournament, where his Golden Boot made him the first player to win two and lifted him to the top of the all-time World Cup scoring list. The 2022 final hat-trick against Argentina remains the only one in a World Cup final since Geoff Hurst in 1966.

The overlap

The two records they share most directly are the Champions League scoring marks: Mbappé was the youngest player to reach 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 goals in the competition, and Haaland then broke several of those "youngest-to" marks and all of the "fastest-to" ones. Haaland leads with 28 career hat-tricks to Mbappé's 25, a gap of 3. The all-time stats page puts those hat-tricks in the context of their overall totals.
