Volume versus efficiency
Mbappé leads with 67 international goals to Haaland's 65, a gap of 2. Mbappé has 48 more caps: he debuted for France in 2017 at 18 and has played two World Cups, two European Championships and several Nations League campaigns. Haaland's Norway debut came in 2019 and, until the 2026 World Cup, he had never played a major tournament, losing play-off and group deciders in 2020, 2022 and 2024. Per cap, however, Haaland is the more efficient scorer (1.10 to 0.63).

Mbappé's tournament pedigree
Mbappé's international CV is one of the best of any active player. He scored four goals at the 2018 World Cup, including one in the final against Croatia, and was named Best Young Player. In Qatar 2022 he won the Golden Boot with eight goals, three of them in the final against Argentina, becoming the first man to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final since 1966 and finishing on the losing side only on penalties. He added the 2021 UEFA Nations League, was made France captain in 2023, and led the 2024 Euros run to the semi-finals despite a broken nose. With 22 World Cup goals he is the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, ahead of Miroslav Klose's 16.
Haaland's Norway burden
Haaland is Norway's all-time leading scorer, having passed Jørgen Juve's record of 33 goals in October 2024, a mark that had stood since 1937, and his 65 goals in 59 caps include 6 hat-tricks. The qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup, in which Norway went unbeaten and Haaland scored in almost every match, ended a 28-year wait for a World Cup appearance. At the tournament itself he scored 7 in 5 games and Norway's run ended at the Quarter-finals stage. France finished the 2026 World Cup in fourth place, with Mbappé scoring 10 in 8 games to win a second Golden Boot.
